Leveraging community engagement best practices to build regional networks focused on collaborative, open research in undergraduate courses

Ellen G. Dow, Ph.D., is the KBase Educators Program Lead for the Department of Energy Systems Biology Knowledgebase (KBase) based at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. She supports a global community of educators that use KBase to train their students in computational biology and bioinformatics. Ellen is also the lead and co-PI for the NSF-funded Microbiomes In Computational Research Opportunities Network (MICROnet) program that supports a network of undergraduate educators training their students to ask important science questions while generating open, FAIR -Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable- microbiome data and publishing student results.

A molecular biologist by training, Ellen applies her academic research experience to recruit and support scientists and educators to engage with the KBase community. She has developed and led workshops around the globe, helping scientists advance their research using computational biology tools.
